Sydney Fish Market

I've been wanting to come here ever since I found out there was such a place...except it was in Sydney. And when I found out we were going there when we were in Sydney I was pretty excited. I was actually quite willing to walk from Darling Harbour all the way there, before you go "it's not even that far...." it was December 30th and SUNNY AS *beep* at 12pm. My only escape was to walk in the shadow of the monorail track.
So when we arrived it was extremely PACKED and after a walk around I was quite disappointed as I had always thought it was a HUMONGOUS place but in actual fact there is only a few fishmongers there. However I was still overjoyed at the sight of all the seafood in particular the variety and amazed at the oyster shuckers. As retarded as this probably sounds I actually would like to shuck oysters as a part time job.
A dozen of oysters
Not exactly the cheapest oysters around but they are pretty fresh and good. Very creamy, not super strong in the oyster richness but what I liked most was that there wasn't that metallic taste. Oh so fresh =]
Except I don't get why they don't have like a mixed dozen which has all the different types of oysters on one tray...I mean if I was just one person I can't afford and handle eating 3 dozens oysters just to try out different ones.
One of the seafood platters, around $50
Yeah.....probably wouldn't order this again...nothing was above alright on the entire platter.
Sashimi salmon, tuna, kingfish,
Not cheap but somewhat fresh. I'm pretty sure the people who slice up the fish aren't sashimi chefs and they cut it really thin which I guess gives less bite and texture =[ Tuna was disappointing. We also got some sea urchin, I'm still not a fan of it, tastes a little bit like the sea and is super creamy. Why do people pay so much for it?

Verdict? They need a fish market like this in Melbourne!! Except next time I will probably get a dozen of oysters and some sashimi and just enjoy it slowly. Oh and I'd avoid lunch hour for sure.

Cooking: Shucking Oysters

Not exactly cooking as we ate them raw. $10.50 a doz from coles unshucked. It is worth the $2 saving to shuck them yourself? At least you know when they were shucked and they didn't sit around exposed for who knows how many days.
I don't know why but the shells were really brittle. Not exactly sure where these oysters were from but were they from slightly more acidic water?
I still can't shuck them from the hinge, they just don't want to open that way. So I shuck them by piercing the wider end at a weak spot. Anyone got tips for shucking from the hinge end?
 12 shucked oysters
They weren't bad, but not as rich as I hoped. I don't think they were very fresh.

Mid Autumn Festival Box Hill LONG OVERDUE

This is about a month late. But I think it's worthy of blogging about. Mid Autumn Festival is awesome because it means MOONCAKES. Lotus paste with egg yolk encased in a almost biscuit like dough covering. Unfortunately the Mid Autumn Festival is no where near as big as in HK. But it was none the less fun to go to Box Hill and celebrate...or mainly to eat some awesome food.
Char Tow Kueh $4ish
Little stir fried rice cakes. A malay dish. Weren't too great especially when all squashed together. I know it should be a lot better but I've never actually had it anywhere else before I don't think
Taiwanese Oyster..something $5ish
Seriously this was soooooo weird. Blobs of this translucent jelly like floury stuff. In a never tasted before sauce. With an oyster or two thrown in with egg. This dish just wasn't for me. Maybe it's an acquired taste?
Xinjiang Lamb Skewers 5 for $10
This is the exact reason why I go to these festivals and line up for 30 mins with smoke blowing into your face. Juicy lamb chunks cooked over a charcoal fire, sprinkled with cumin and chilli. I could eat 5 or more of these, no problems. I know you can get them in the city opposite state library for $3 each but I have yet to try it.

We had a few other things like deep fried school prawns and octopus. Although they were on the salty side it was really nice. One thing I really wanted to try was the deep fried spiral potato chip. Except at $5 a stick which was one potato it was insanely expensive. I might try it make it myself after exams.

Sorry about the photo quality, all taken using my phone. Next time a festival is on make sure you check it out, there is awesome food there and some of it you can't get in restaurants.

Eating Out: Kambo Chinese Restaurant, Cnr Canterbury Rd, 1 Mahoneys Rd, Forest Hill

Booked a table for 8pm at around 6pm on Friday night. Chose this place because of their special "If your birthday is in August, get a free oyster for you and your friends/family". And hoped that we could get 2 oysters each for free since both my dad and I are born in August but its only one birthday person per table.

Ordered the "live fish" set. You can't choose the dishes, they are already set. Can't exactly remember the names of dishes so I will describe them instead.
Complimentary Soup
This came literally straight after we ordered. The lady scooped it in around 10-20 seconds before attending other tables. Typical complimentary soup. I believe it was dried vegetable/cai, carrot and pork soup. And probably some added flavour enhancer/msg.
XO Oysters
Yes only 4 were free. That's how they make money from this offer. Most people don't just get one oyster each, they want at least 2 and therefore buy more for $2.50 each 0.0 Initially ordered 4 XO chilli ones and 4 spring onion and ginger ones but when they came it was 8 XO Chilli ones with spring onion on top. Not sure what went wrong but we didn't bother asking, they looked so yummy. The oysters were massive, though not strongly flavoured the XO sauce really helped. Though I feel a better quality XO sauce would have been better. The oysters were just undercooked which is fine because it retained its creamy squishy part. And the second all the oysters were taken and eaten from the plate, a waiter had come along and collected the empty dish. It was amazing.
Lemon Grass Pork Chops?
Like most Cantonese cuisine you find in restaurants now, the pork had been deep fried before being put into a sauce, but no batter. The sauce lacked lemongrass flavour and had lots of honey in it. Don't think I've ever tried a dish like this before. Also they could have used cleaner oil as there were little specks of the stuff that sinks into the oil all over the pork. I guess we went later in the night and they've been frying all day long so the oil couldn't have been cleaned.

Stir Fried Garlic Baby Spinach
Didn't expect this much spinach. It was really packed onto the plate. It was a little too oily that ever leaf was shiny. The garlic could have been a little stronger, otherwise it was a fine dish. Can't really go wrong with asian vegies.
Scallops on Tofu
Not a fan of tofu, especially when its super big to minimise the amount of scallops required. The tofu was bland and you had to cut it down the middle and pour the sauce into it. The scallops were typical chinese restaurant ones...if you get what I mean. Something out of a packet possibly. Still had some scallop taste to it.
Steamed Live Barramundi
I love fish, especially when it's steamed asian style. The flesh was soft and just cooked. Good flavour and was really delicate. Sooooo delicious yet simple.
Fruit platter
Seriously it's very hard to make fruit platter look good. Straight of the fridge to you fruit platter. Wafer thin slices of watermelon and orange. Both sweet.
Sweet soup-mung bean?
Not a fan of warm sweet soups, I like cold ones. This wasn't too bad, typical honkie style.

Food: 7/10 Nothing spectacular, everything was average and expected.
Service: 8/10 Quite impressed. Don't expect to chat to your waiter. This place is to the point, and done asap.  Tea pots are refilled before you know it. Dishes come quickly and go just as fast. Amazed at how quick everything was done with only 4 waiters for the entire restaurant.
Environment: 7/10 Once again, a typical chinese restaurant. Don't expect sparkling dishes. Or quite surroundings.

Verdict? If I was in a hurry or if it was late at night I would come since they have a different menu past a certain time of night. However only if I was in the neighbourhood. There are other places closer to home with similar food. Sat down at 8pm, finished dinner just after 9. Impressive.

Cooking: Baked Oysters

Yesterday whilst grocery shopping with mum, we decided to get some oysters for dinner. Kinda cheap at $9.99 a doz (although u can get it for $7 a doz at narooma) since it's normally around $12 or more a doz.But at that price there must be a catch right? Catch is they were UNSHUCKED oysters, in other words they weren't opened yet. I learned how to shuck oysters almost a year ago when we went to Narooma in NSW, that place is full of oysters. Really really nice town, the water is crystal blue.
So we didn't end up eating the oysters yesterday for dinner and instead we ate them for lunch today. Decided to make baked oysters.
Ingredients: Oysters, onion, bacon, cream and cheese.

Before they went under the grill

After they came out
Quite nice, could have been better. Everytime you learn something and you'll know how to improve next time.
Don't know when i'll cook next.
