Eating Out: Wong's Lucky Bar 旺旺幸运吧- Whitehorse Rd, Box Hill

Situated in the MIDDLE of the ROAD (in between the traffic light which connects box hill central and 7-eleven, where the tram stop is) is this little Malaysian/Chinese Restaurant. They've been putting a lot of ads in the Chinese newspapers about their $6.90 Hainanese Chicken Rice and "Authentic" Laksa.

Walked in to see WILL PAN on the mounted tv =D Sat down and ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice, Seafood Laksa and Nasi Goreng. Watched Jay's 2007 World Tour Concert whilst waiting. The dishes arrived very quickly and looked quite presentable....but looks aren't everything. Sorry no pics, totally forgot to take pics until everything was half eaten but I'm pretty sure everyone knows what Hainanese Chicken Rice, Laksa and Nasi Goreng looks like.

Hainanese Chicken Rice-I can't say it was exceptional. I would probably give it an alright. The rice was very fragrant, the 6 or so decent sized pieces of boneless chicken could have been "smoother" and I swear the chilli sauce was dyed red.....Overall this dish was like SALT on SALT on more SALT and that was without the soup....

Laksa- Made from quite bland seafood mix and seafood highlighter I have to say I was quite disappointed. I felt the soup base didn't have enough spices and not rich enough. It was a creamier colour than usual. If I were to come here again I wouldn't order the laksa again. But then again what would a honkie girl who hasn't been to Malaysia know about a laksa?

Nasi Goreng- What can you say about fried rice? It was pretty average. I'm not sure what is supposed to be in Nasi Goreng but it can't be brown special fried rice right?

Verdict? To be honest I wouldn't come back again considering all the other choices in Box Hill. Sorry, maybe for their Hainanese Chicken if they decide to go easy on the salt.

Eating Out: 大长今dae jang geum-Chinatown

This blog post is about a week late. Last week I went shopping for an 18th pressie for Mat with Ngoc and Abel. After buying his present we went out for lunch. (Sounds a bit like Ngoc's blog post bout this day..btw check out her blog cos it's funny as and she's one of the most amazing artists --> Ngoc's Blog)
Anyways back to lunch. Ngoc felt like Korean so we ended up walking past this place where they had two ladies dressed in traditional korean outfits holding menus out the front, I felt so sorry for them as it was 35 degrees outside. We walked inside to find a massive flight of stairs (we were so tired from pressie shopping) but awesome aircon. Sat down and they gave us a massive bottle of chilled water : ) and they're teacups were abnormally large....they took forever to fill up.

I ordered the beef bulgogi set which is the plate in the top right corner, all the dishes in the middle and a bowl of rice. The beef was quite sweet but I think it's supposed to be like that. Definietly needs to be eaten with rice. The kimchi was quite sour but not extremely chilli which was good. All the rest of the accompaniments were pretty average. Though the chilli cucumber was refreshing on such a hot day. Ngoc and Abel both chose noodles (hence the two bowls in the pic) Both were boiling hot for ages. Bad choice for them on such a hot day (thank god that place had awesome aircon). Ngoc had a Chicken Noodles I think, looked very yummy. And Abel had Seafood Noodles which came with this massive prawn he didn't know how to eat without using his hands. Abel seems to love the noodles (think they were handmade) and ate them in world record time despite the soup being boiling hot.

Verdict? Definitely would go there again to try their noodles. The place was super spacious, very hard to find spacious restaurants in Chinatown. Lunch was under $10 for each of us which I guess is pretty good for us students with little money. And it probably one of the
cleaner places in Chinatown, very clean indeed.

Fairwood

You're probably wondering what Fairwood is.....or not. It pretty much the same as Cafe de Coral just a different company. Went there to grab a quick lunch before heading out. I forgot the exact name of what I ordered so I'm just going to make it up. Crumbed Pork Cutlet with Mushroom Sauce and Omurice with a Peach Drink?

The pork cutlet was pretty good, wasn't tough and had a thin layer of crumbs. Although a tad dry it did come with a sauce so it was fine. The omurice was different, it's tomato rice omelette, the egg was way overcooked but you can't expect perfectly cooked eggs at a place like Fairwood. All their food is pretty cooked to meet demands. The peach drink was really good. Fizzy with little cubes of jelly. Yummy :) All for I think $36 (AUD$5ish)

Chinese Roast-Tai Hing Roast, Tai Wai

Yesterday we went and had Chinese Roast. Unfortunately I had half a packed of mini spring rolls just before parents decided to go out for lunch and therefore I was not hungry at all. We ordered a Roast Goose on Rice, Roast Pork on Rice and a Eight Roasts on Rice.
Roast Goose on Rice:  I have to say that this place has gone downhill with their roasts. The roast goose was tough but not very fatty. It was about the standard we get in Australia. At least you get a lot more meat here.

Roast Pork on Rice: I have to say this was the worst dish we ordered. Roast Pork isn't easy to make, but I'm pretty sure they used the wrong cut of meat. The entire piece of roast pork was meat, no fat whatsoever, very disappointed. The skin wasn't crunchy.

Eight Roasts on Rice:  This one was the best out of the three dishes. The roasts meats were pretty average but I guess it was pretty cheap at just over HK$50. Came with an entire salted duck egg, a treasure in Australia but an average ingredient in HK.

Vedict? Recommend? No, this place was pretty good when I went 3 years ago, but now it's under par. DEFINITELY better chinese roasts in HK, way better. Was quite disappointed.
